The colours of the Belgian flag represent an undivided country. The political reality appears to have overtaken this unity. The positions taken by the regions may lead to a changed state system. Belgium as a country redefines itself. If that comes to pass, the symbols of the state - the flag and the arms -, will have to be redefined.
What will these look like? This is a first step.
The colours of the federal flag have been taken from the Flemish and Walloon flags: the black for Flanders, the red for Wallonia. Yellow for the comined territory so the federal Belgian state.
